The people who got rich by studying your brain, then used it against you.

Start with a question. Why can’t you put your phone down?

It’s not because you’re weak. It’s because some of the smartest people in the world were paid, very well, to make sure you can’t. This is the true story of who they are, where they learned it, and what it cost you.

It started in a lab at Stanford

In 1998, a professor named B.J. Fogg opened a lab at Stanford University in California. The lab studied one big question: can computers change what people think and do?

The answer was yes. And Dr. Fogg found the recipe. For a person to do something, three things have to line up at the same moment:

  • They have to want it, even a little.
  • It has to be easy.
  • Something has to tap them on the shoulder at just the right time.

He wrote it like a math formula: B = MAP. Behavior happens when Motivation, Ability, and a Prompt all hit at once.

Now notice what the recipe never asks: “Is this good for the person?” It only asks: “Will the person do it?” That question, will they do it, became the most valuable question in Silicon Valley.

The trick, in plain words

You don’t need a science degree to be run by this science. You just need a phone. Here’s how the recipe works on you every day:

They turned your phone into a slot machine. Back in the 1950s, a scientist named B.F. Skinner proved something strange: random rewards hook people harder than steady ones. A rat that gets food every time it presses a lever gets bored. A rat that sometimes gets food presses the lever forever. That’s why casinos work. And that’s exactly what pull-to-refresh is: pull the lever, and sometimes there’s something good. Your feed is a slot machine you carry in your pocket. Except this casino pays you nothing.

They made the wrong thing the easy thing. Grocery stores put milk in the back so you walk past everything, and candy at the register at kid height. Apps do the same thing with your attention. One-click buying. Videos that start playing by themselves. A feed with no bottom, because a bottom is a place where you might stop and think. They never make you do anything. They just make their thing effortless and your exit hard to find.

They tap you at your weakest moment. That red dot. That ping. Notifications aren’t timed for your convenience. They’re designed to grab you when you’re bored, lonely, or tired, because that’s when you’re easiest to grab. A notification is someone else’s to-do list, stapled into your brain.

They aim below your thinking. Your brain has a fast part and a slow part. The fast part reacts; the slow part reasons. (A scientist named Daniel Kahneman won a Nobel Prize for showing how this works.) Persuasion tech aims at the fast part on purpose, because the fast part doesn’t argue back. Ever notice drug commercials show people dancing while a voice speed-reads side effects “including death”? The FDA has sent drug companies warning letters about exactly that. The music and the dancing make it harder for your brain to process the risks. The dancing is there so you don’t hear the dying.

And when the tricks aren’t enough, they cheat. The hidden fee at the last step. The “sale” countdown that starts over when you refresh. Signing up takes one click; canceling takes twenty. These have a name, dark patterns, and government regulators in the U.S. and Europe now call many of them what they are: deception.

The students who became millionaires and billionaires

The recipe didn’t stay in the lab. It walked out inside people.

Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger met through Stanford’s programs. In 2010 they launched Instagram: one-tap filters (easy), likes (belonging), an endless photo feed (no bottom). In 2012, Facebook bought it for about $1 billion.

Evan Spiegel and Bobby Murphy, also from Stanford, built Snapchat, home of the “streak,” the little fire emoji that makes kids afraid to stop.

Nir Eyal studied Fogg’s model and wrote Hooked (2014), literally a how-to manual for building habit-forming products. Tech companies treated it like a cookbook. Years later, he wrote a second book, Indistractable, teaching readers how to escape the first one.

Luis von Ahn, trained at Carnegie Mellon University, co-founded Duolingo: streaks, points, leaderboards, celebrations. The same slot-machine recipe, wearing a friendly green owl suit.

Columbia Business School sells executive courses teaching persuasion to managers, influence, by the credit hour.

Three schools built and fed the pipeline: Stanford, Carnegie Mellon, and Columbia. The students got rich. The companies got richer. And every hour you’ve lost to a screen since is where the money came from.

The receipts

This isn’t just our opinion anymore. It’s on court records.

In 2026, a Los Angeles jury found Meta (Instagram’s owner) and YouTube liable in a case about addictive design harming a young person: about $6 million in damages.

A New Mexico jury hit Meta with roughly $375 million in penalties under child-safety and consumer-protection laws.

Hundreds of similar lawsuits across the country point to the companies’ own internal documents, showing they knew about the harm and kept the features anyway.

The FDA has repeatedly warned drug advertisers, in writing, that their upbeat ads undermine the safety warnings the law requires.

Juries saw the evidence. Juries agreed.

What happened to their ethics?

Here is the question that should bother you most, because it bothers us most.

Every one of them was taught right from wrong. In a classroom. In this exact subject.

Dr. Fogg taught the ethics of persuasive technology starting in the late 1990s. His own book has an ethics chapter. And in 1999 (before Instagram, before smartphones), two researchers in this field published a rule that could not be plainer: if you build a persuasion machine, you are responsible for what it predictably does to people.

Read that again. The warning label was written before the products were built. The people who built your feed sat through the class about the dangers of building your feed. They read the rule. Then the job offers came, and they set everything they’d been taught on a shelf, because ethics was the one thing in the curriculum that cost money to keep.

And here’s what proves it was a choice: the honest road was open the whole time, and other scientists took it.

Think about what a real brain scientist does with the same knowledge. An MRI machine finds the tumor. A brain scan finds where a seizure starts. Addiction doctors use the same reward science (the slot-machine science) to help people break addictions instead of building them. And every bit of that work follows three rules the attention economy breaks on purpose: the patient knows. The patient agrees. The patient’s goal is the goal. There is no manipulation in an MRI. There can’t be. The moment the doctor’s goal replaces the patient’s, it stops being medicine.

Even inside the persuasion field itself, honest scientists exist, and they deserve to be named, so we name them below.

So the test is one question: who holds the goal? A coach and a con man both study you closely. The coach uses what he learns to get you to your goal. The con man uses it to get you to his. A brain doctor and a growth engineer study the same brain. One reads it to save it, the other games it to bill it.

Everyone in this story knew which one they were. They were taught the difference, by name, in a classroom, and they stayed because the other door paid better.

That’s not a mistake. That’s not a gray area. That’s the oldest choice there is.

Credit where it’s due: the ones who chose the other road

We named the people who cashed in. Fairness says we also name the ones who didn’t, because they prove the choice was real.

Dr. Rita Orji at Dalhousie University in Canada holds a national research chair in persuasive technology: the same field, at the top of it. Her lab points the recipe at mental health, safety, and communities that usually get ignored.

Dr. Mauro Cherubini at the University of Lausanne in Switzerland builds tools that help people exercise, meditate, and drop bad habits. And here’s the part that matters most: his lab designs interventions to be temporary, built to make themselves unnecessary. The dependency the feed builds in, his lab builds out. Same recipe. Opposite kitchen.

Researchers at the Cyprus University of Technology aim the same science at misinformation: nudges that help people fact-check before they share.

At MIT, scientists didn’t build the machine. They measured the damage. In 2018, three researchers (Soroush Vosoughi, Deb Roy, and Sinan Aral) studied millions of tweets and published the result in the journal Science: false news spreads farther and faster than the truth, because lies are built to be more surprising and more emotional. Daniel Berdichevsky and Erik Neuenschwander wrote the 1999 warning itself. They put the rule on paper before there was money in breaking it.

And beyond them stands every radiologist reading a scan, every addiction doctor breaking a loop, every clinical researcher using brain science with consent, in the open, for the patient’s own goal.

Notice something about this list: none of them are billionaires. That’s not an accident. That’s the price tag on the honest road, and they paid it. They are the living proof that “everyone was doing it” is a lie. Everyone was not doing it. The honest ones were right there (same training, same journals, same conferences) the whole time. The people who chose manipulation had to walk past them to get to the money.

So who’s responsible? Everyone in the chain.

The companies. They picked these tricks on purpose, measured how hard they gripped you on dashboards, and kept them after they knew the harm. Juries are now saying so out loud.

The scientists and professors. They knew exactly what a slot-machine schedule does to a human brain. That knowledge is the whole reason they were hired. Some also sold the knowledge retail: the courses, the how-to books, the consulting fees. A paycheck buys your work. It does not buy your forgiveness. Not for a doctor, not for a nurse, not for an engineer, and not for them.

The universities. Stanford didn’t just host the lab. It took the research money, the fame, the tuition of students who came to learn the recipe, and the donations of graduates who got rich using it. So did the other schools in the pipeline. And after the verdicts came in? No money returned. No program changed. Nobody sanctioned. These are schools that will expel a student for copying a paragraph, and found nothing wrong with graduates hooking a billion brains. That silence isn’t neutral. It’s a position, and it was profitable.

Add it up. The universities got the grants, the prestige, and the donations. The professors got the careers, the royalties, and the fees. The founders got the millions and billions. Everyone in the chain got paid except you. You were the payment.

The good news

Here’s what they never advertise: every one of these tricks gets weaker the moment you can see it.

A countdown timer you know is fake is just a graphic. A notification you recognize as a grab is just a request, and requests can be declined. The slot machine only works on people who don’t know they’re standing in a casino.
