Every bad hire, bad law, bad policy, bad diagnosis, bad project, bad relationship: all of them trace back to a thinking mistake that went unnoticed.
The problems that are not caused by thinking are caused by nature. Earthquakes. Disease. Physics. Everything else on the list has a human decision somewhere in the chain. And every human decision has a thought behind it.
This is not a character problem. It is a thinking problem.
The research on this is fifty years old and completely unambiguous.
Most human thinking is fast and automatic. It runs on patterns. It feels like reasoning, but often isn’t. The errors aren’t random either. They’re predictable. They repeat. They show up the same way in every population ever studied.
High intelligence does not protect you from these errors. Education can make them worse. Smarter people are simply better at building excuses for conclusions they already reached. More information doesn’t help either. It just gives confirmation bias more to work with.
The brain was not designed for accuracy. It was designed for speed, social cohesion, and survival. Truth is a byproduct, not the goal. And for most of human history that was fine.
It is not fine anymore.
The cost is everywhere once you know where to look.
Crime is not evil. It is almost always impulsive thinking, short time horizons, and trouble seeing consequences coming. Those are measurable patterns. Nobody ever trained them out. Generational poverty is not laziness. It runs on mental shortcuts built for immediate survival, not long-term thinking. Those patterns compound across generations, because nobody ever named them. Political polarization is confirmation bias at civilization scale. Social media rage is the part of the brain built for physical threats, running loose in a world of digital ones, because nobody ever taught it to stop.
None of these are destiny. All of them are patterns. And patterns can be changed.

Daniel Kahneman and Amos Tversky spent decades studying human judgment. They found it wrong in the same ways, again and again. Not once in a while. Not just in tricky cases. This is how every human mind works under uncertainty. Their work on the shortcuts and errors behind everyday judgment found something important: the mistakes aren’t random noise. They are the signal.1
Keith Stanovich showed that rational thinking has nothing to do with intelligence. A high IQ does not protect you from thinking errors. Educated people make the same mistakes as everyone else. They’re just better at making up reasons for them after the fact. Stanovich named the gap between intelligence and rational thinking dysrationalia: a mind that can think clearly, and doesn’t.2
Hugo Mercier and Dan Sperber asked a bigger question: why do humans reason at all? Their answer broke the old assumption. Reasoning did not evolve to find truth. It evolved to win arguments and look good in front of others. The brain was built to persuade, not to be accurate. Truth is a side effect, not the goal.3
Dan Kahan at Yale found something hard to accept. More education and more information make motivated reasoning worse, not better. Smarter people are simply better at filtering out facts that threaten what they already believe. Knowledge does not fix the problem. It arms the problem.4
Cynthia Morewedge showed that training works. Show people their own patterns. Give them tools to catch those patterns in the moment. The result is real, lasting improvement in how they decide things. Thinking errors are not permanent. They can be trained away.5
The research has been sitting in academic journals for fifty years. Peer reviewed. Replicated. Cited thousands of times. And in all that time nobody ever turned it into something a person could actually use.
If you train the thought, you change the decision.
If you change enough decisions, you change the outcome.
At scale, across enough people, across enough roles, across enough domains, you change the world.
That is not a mission statement. That is the logical conclusion of everything the science has ever found about how human beings think, decide, and act.
